1965 War |

The war began in April 1965,
when fighting broke out in the Rann of Kachchh, a region along the West Pakistan-India
border. The Pakistan Army used
the SSG of commandos to sabotage Indian Air Force bases at Pathankot, Adampur and Halwara.
While the main body of commandos were parachuted into Punjab, a good number were dropped
into other Indian states. The Indian authorities
informed the US about the use of American weapons by the Pakistani forces. Pakistan was
under an obligation under the Mutual Security Act, not to use American weapons in
aggression against any other country. This led the US government to impose an arms embargo
on both the belligerents on September 8, 1965. On the following day, the State Department
declared US neutrality in the Indo-Pak conflict. |
